How do you keep decision-making fast when your startup starts growing?

by•

In the early days everything was simple talk to users fix bugs and ship code fast.

Now that we're bigger every tiny change impacts support, tech maintenance and ten different opinions. Suddenly basic decisions take weeks to get through.

How do you stop growth from making your whole process slow and complicated?

I think giving each person clear onwership can speed thing up.

I have found that documenting the why behind past architecture or product choices in a shared wiki stops people from settled debates every single week.

When your company scales past ten people, consensus driven decision making is a silent killder of speed and momentum so you have to shift toward informed consent instead.

Looking back, letting every single department weigh in on minor UI tweaks was our biggest mistake since it turned simple bug fixes into multi week political debates.

I get where you come from but adding more voices can hide who owns the call. I've started keeping the decision and owner together, otherwise the same debate comes back next week.
