For founders past the "just launched" phase, what actually worked to build real traction?

A few weeks post-launch here, and I've noticed a real gap between what I assumed would drive growth and what's actually happening. Cold outreach with genuine, specific research has worked better than expected. Directory listings have been mostly quiet. Community threads like this one, oddly, have produced some of the most genuine engagement.
Curious what this looked like for others further along than me. Not looking for generic "do content marketing" advice, more interested in the specific channel that surprised you, either working way better or worse than expected, or a moment you realized you'd been targeting the wrong kind of user entirely.
What actually moved the needle for you, versus what you thought would?

Same surprise, and I measured mine. The channel was not the variable. Placement inside the channel was.
Comparable comments on Reddit got 221 views, then 15, 12 and 9. Identical effort. The spread came entirely from which thread they sat in. Here on PH six of my eight forum threads got zero replies, while comments in other people's active threads produced every real maker conversation I have had.
So I would sharpen your community finding: threads work where attention already exists. Starting my own room is the worst performing thing I do and standing in someone else's is the best. What did the genuine research step in your cold outreach actually look like? That is the part most people skip.
