Do you ever work on your startup all day and still feel like you did nothing?
I've had a lot of days like this recently.
I can spend the entire day fixing small product details, coding, replying to people, reviewing designs, making designs, posting on social media, writing copy, planning features, discussing decisions with my co-founders, testing something, and solving random problems that appeared five minutes earlier.
Then the day ends, and I still feel like I did nothing.
There is no big feature to announce. No impressive screenshot. No sudden jump in users or revenue. Sometimes I cannot even explain what I completed without going through my messages and browser history.
But at the same time, many of these small things are necessary. A clearer sentence can improve onboarding. One bug fix can prevent users from leaving. A short conversation can change a product decision. A reply to the right person can create an opportunity weeks later.
The difficult part is knowing the difference between invisible progress and simply being busy. 🙃
Because "I worked all day" does not automatically mean the company moved forward. It is also very easy to spend hours polishing things that do not matter, responding to everything immediately, or doing comfortable tasks instead of the uncomfortable important one...
I've started asking myself a few questions at the end of the day:
What is different because I worked today?
What decision was made?
What became easier for the team or the user?
What important thing can now happen that could not happen yesterday?
It helps, but I still have days where the honest answer feels unclear.. :)
How do you judge whether you had a productive day as a founder?
Do you track completed tasks, hours worked, decisions made, user outcomes, or something else?
And how do you personally recognize the difference between real progress and productive-looking procrastination? (very interested!)
P.S. lately, I've started keeping a little journal where I write down what I've been doing (both in my business and in my personal life, to get a better overview of my life, have any of you done something like this or tried it?)
