Built one first, and the thing I'd stress is where you build it, not just whether. An audience on a platform you don't own can vanish with an algorithm change or a ban. The ones that compound are the people you can reach directly: email, a community space, a member list you control.
I work on DukieX.com, so I'm biased toward the owned-home model, but even setting that aside, I'd treat "who can I reach without asking permission?" as the real audience metric, not follower count.
