Are newsletters considered “products”?

by

Heeeey PH community 👋

I’ve seen a few people launch their newsletters here and there (which I loved!), but I’m curious:

  • Are newsletters considered a “fit” for Product Hunt?

  • Would a weekly curation project like this be too lightweight, or still valuable if there’s community interest?

I know PH usually leans into SaaS/tools/startups, but I’m seeing more indie creators and media projects pop up, so I’d love to understand the line.

If you’ve launched a newsletter on PH before (or seen great ones), I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips on how to do it right 🙌

As long as it gets accepted, why not doing it. I personally have a problem, the majority of threads that I write are being rejected without them specifying the exact violation and after having a look on the guideline, I was not able to identify the issue

@viktorgems Ah, I also encounter this situation sometimes :)) Sometimes I know it's because I'm a little pushy and try to add a mention related to a product in the forum, but oftentimes they're just rejected. I simply assume that maybe the topic has been approached before, maybe there are already other more interesting topics pending that day, or maybe the moderators didn't find it valuable for the community. But I get it, it also annoys me a bit when it happens 😅

Heeeey @ruxandra_mazilu 👋

Newsletters absolutely count as products in my opinion- especially when they deliver unique value or build communities around interesting topics. PH is evolving beyond just SaaS tools to indie creators and media projects, so a well-crafted newsletter can definitely find a home and audience.

The trick is to treat your newsletter launch like a product launch: showcase what makes it special, the problem it solves, and why people should subscribe. Community interest is key, and if you build that, PH will follow.

All the best (and count me in for the newsletter)!

@sanskarix, heeey Sanskar, that's so kind! Thank you lots for your support - you're right that I should treat it like a product launch! I'm quite excited to see PH evolving beyond SaaS; it's refreshing and inspiring to see a variety of types of products around!

If you're curious, this is the newsletter I'm referring to (planning to do an upgrade on the website) https://curiositysavedthecat.com/

@ruxandra_mazilu do you have any examples of newsletters you love? I'm curious.

@jasper_van_de_ree Heey Jasper!

So, firstly, I love writing for my newsletter 😆

But to mention a couple of newsletters that I open every time I see in my inbox: Morning Brew, Total Annarchy by Ann Handley, Future Social by Jack Appleby, and Your Next Breakthrough by Mark Manson. These are just some I had top of mind, but there are more that I enjoy!

What about you?

I think, newsletters are definitely products if they bring value or make people’s lives easier. I’ve seen some really cool ones do great on PH, it’s all about whether the community finds it useful.

@priyankamandal Ah, that's so nice to hear! I'll look into it and most probably start preparing a launch - yey!

I did a quick search and found @From Spark to Startup launched on PH. It’s a newsletter for aspiring entrepreneurs and individuals looking to start their own startup or business. So, I suppose that if the positioning is strong and the audience perceives it as useful, newsletters can definitely fit here 😊
