POLL: Could you get by without using any Facebook products?

by
I noticed that #DeleteFacebook is trending on Twitter today and it made me curious about how us makers rely on their products. While I don't use Facebook anywhere near as much as I did about 12-13 years ago in my college days, I rely on WhatsApp and Messenger to stay in touch with friends and family. Instagram is also the main marketing channel for my side hustle. I could not get by without using any Facebook products. Could you?

I hated using Whatsapp for work..switched to Rivers IM, many people hate whatsapp for many reasons, for me I don't want to get my work on whatsapp..mixing up with my personal stuff facebook i use seldom ..go there in around a week or 10 days may be and insta...well i use it to consume content but the uses is low..like once in 2 months may be..so i think I can definitely get-by just fine..though will definitely miss them..

Like so many others in this thread, I use WhatsApp everyday to connect with family and friends. I know there are alternatives but it's just so easy and where everyone already is. Would 100% miss it if I had to go without.

Like with anything (becoming vegetarian etc) it's often a matter of habit, but when they become toxic you have to do something. In the case of FB tools its hard to be the outlier as you miss out on convos that the herd is on. I gave up using personal facebook quite easily, but for work I still need an account to access APIs. Remember when you couldn't "get by" without Yahoo!? Google is still the biggest hurdle for me - gmail, search and Maps. I tried DuckDuckGo but put off by their UI and the results. Apple maps I try to use as often as possible too. Excited for the next gen tools from indie startups that take privacy seriously!

Personally would be easier but professionally I feel would be really limiting growth. If your audience is on instagram or facebook, you're giving up potential followers/users/spokespeople for your brand—especially if you're just starting out.

I would love to ditch FB, but I run a business that sort of relies on the FB business page. Without my personal account, I wouldn't be able to run the business page :(

For personal use? Yes! But for business purposes, Instagram and Whatsapp too powerful to ignore

Maybe but I'd prefer not to. Messenger is still the greatest messaging platform in terms of reaching out to strangers and forming group chats (since there are so many features such as reminders and polls). And Facebook Ads are still a really effective way of reaching out to your audience. I can see the Facebook News Feed being easily replaceable (since people would rather post pics and videos on IG/Snap/Tik Tok), but they've done a good job on making their other products stalwarts. I'd love to see someone create the next great messaging app though! And IG/Snap DM doesn't count (their messaging isn't all that great)

I own a Fab Lab/makerspace and about half our sales come from Facebook interaction, so...NO, sadly I couldn't make it without FB.

It's probably the only trend that I "launched" in my life. I deleted Facebook in 2012, never had Instagram, and I use Telegram. I read that many people say they can't find their friends on Telegram. That was the same for me. I simply told them that if they wanted to talk with me, I was on Telegram. Honestly, if you don't spend 30 seconds to download an app, then I am not particular important for you, which is fine for me. We can live without each other. I have seen few companies more unethical than Facebook. Developing a product that can create serious psychological, then hiring neuroscientists to make it addictive and targeting teenagers who have no means to defend themselves is disgusting enough for me. I took my business elsewhere.

I really don't think that I could get by without it with how linked it is to social life at Uni. In moving to uni, I was surprised how ubiquitous Facebook is used here, for event planning, societies and even in organizing some course events. While I use Instagram and Whatsapp everyday, I'm sure I could find alternatives to Whatsapp in that I already prefer using IMessage for it's UI and being able to use it on my Mac is amazing. Although for DMs and getting live info from people I follow in the way of stories, I really would struggle to lose Instagram as there isn't any reasonable alternative I can think of, which comes close to the community and features Instagram offers.
