Emergency contact card checklist: the 8 things a stranger needs to help your family

When something happens to you, the person helping is often a neighbour, a babysitter, a coworker or a paramedic who has never met you. Here's what they need to find in under a minute, in the order they need it:

1. Who to call first, and a second person if the first doesn't answer. Write the relationship too ("sister", "neighbour with a key").

2. Allergies, especially to medications and foods.

If someone had to call for help for you, what would they need to know first?

Family Ready: Emergency Plan launches here on 7 November. I'm one of the makers.

The core of the app is a free Emergency Card: who to call first, allergies, current medications and important health information, saved on your iPhone so it opens without internet once the phone is unlocked. Emergency Mode is a high-contrast, large-text screen with no ads, pop-ups or purchase prompts, and the card never needs a subscription. You can make one for yourself, a child, a parent or someone you care for, with their permission.

Family Ready: Emergency Plan - A family emergency binder that lives on your iPhone

Family Ready organizes what your family would need in an emergency: contacts, health information, key documents, insurance, home details like where the shut-offs are, and care notes for kids, older relatives and pets. It's stored encrypted on your iPhone in plain sections and prints a free, dated Emergency Snapshot PDF. The free Emergency Card opens in a high-contrast Emergency Mode without internet. Free core plan, no account to start. A planning tool, not an emergency service.
