Mac developers, what does your release workflow look like?

by•

Hi everyone! I’m Miguel, an indie Mac developer based in Toronto.

When I started distributing my first app outside the Mac App Store, I realised that finishing the app was only part of the job. There was still signing, notarization, stapling, creating the installer, and preparing updates.

I wanted a workflow I could reuse without going through the same manual steps every time. That eventually led me to build DMGKit, which brings those tasks together in a native Mac app.

I’ve just released version 3 and I’m preparing its Product Hunt launch.

I’m curious how other Mac developers handle this today. Do you use your own scripts, a CI pipeline, Xcode, or a dedicated app? And which part of releasing an update still gives you the most trouble?

For context, here’s what I’ve been building:

Happy to answer questions about my approach, too.
