@fredrivett stupid drones! Mine was considerably less expensive than that one though, so maybe it has a "don't fly away" mode?

@thejournalizer @fredrivett nah, it was one of the Parrot mini drones. It just lost its mind, flew up and away. Had it for less than 24 hours :D

I paraglide so the dream is to have a drone that can follow me around when I fly, but definitely doesn't accidentally rip my glider/lines apart. One step closer...

I bought the Phantom 3 Standard for $500 (normally $800) and don't regret it at all, especially considering this is more than 2x the cost. With that said, imo real-time obstacle detection is one of the last hurtles to deployment of drones for real solutions. Package delivery, crop analysis, and unique urban solutions like finding cars that are not parked correctly and snapping a pic of the license plate (yes - this is currently under development at DJI) all depend on the ability to avoid collisions with targets. Can't wait to see what companies start using these for. 🙌🏼

@nhbschr Kind of wondering in their demo video, the clip where it's avoiding obstacles in the snowy woods, it started to rise vertically in order to avoid a tree. If that was the case, wouldn't the probability of one of the props hitting a branch and crashing be pretty high? Even if a branch was in front of it, I'm wondering what the tolerance is for all of the 4's sensors to be able to detect something that thin. A 1cm thick branch could still easily make it crash.

I keep eyeing up drones on a almost weekly basis, especially to use on Buffer retreats to get some unique angles to share afterwards. This new Phantom 4 looks to lower the learning curve with the options to tap on the screen to guide the drone and the obstacle avoidance and tracking is a huge plus along with the extra 25% flying time! Have a Micro Drone on the way but can see an upgrade from that coming with these updates!

Echoing what Noah said. The ability to autonomously avoid collisions is the inflection point for more sophisticated and pervasive uses of drones. Once the payload capacities and data transmission range increase, industries such as courier/delivery and security monitoring will adopt them en masse.
