This game was everything. It proved that you didn't need a powerful console, crazy special effects, or even color to have an incredible gaming experience. I love that when you died you had to start completely over from the beginning. Because the game was the same every time, it became this feat of memorization and timing.
I remember the day when I learned from a friend that there were cheats in the game. You could jump in specific spots and bypass really hard levels by running along the top. I just thought that was the coolest thing in the world. And the fact that this was before Google - so no one *really* knew if we had even found all the cheats, and I ended up spending hours just jumping around in random locations trying to find a new hidden platform - made discovering the cheats and tricks even more special.
This is still my favorite video game to date.
