How does the AI handle contracts in jurisdictions outside the US, and does it pick up on subtleties in non-English contracts or translation quirks that could throw off the risk scoring?

Great question! Here's how ContractReview handles this:
Jurisdiction detection: The AI automatically identifies the governing law jurisdiction from the contract text itself (e.g., "This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of Singapore"). Contract type and jurisdiction are both detected and displayed in the report header so you can verify them immediately.
Non-English contracts: Our primary AI backend is DeepSeek, which has strong multilingual capabilities —it handles Chinese, Japanese, and other major languages natively. For CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) contracts, we even embed CJK fonts in the PDF reports automatically. The risk scoring logic is language-agnostic —it evaluates clause fairness, missing protections, and unbalanced terms regardless of language.
Translation quirks: This is a real concern. We recommend analyzing contracts in their original language when possible. If you must analyze a translated version, be aware that machine translation can introduce ambiguity that affects risk scoring. The AI will flag unclear or ambiguous language in the "explanation" field —that's often a signal to double-check the original text.
Honest caveat: ContractReview is designed as a first-line screening tool, not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice. For high-value cross-border contracts, we recommend having a local attorney review the AI's findings. The AI catches 80% of common issues (unbalanced liability, missing termination clauses, vague IP language) that are universal across most legal systems —but local nuance always matters.
What's next: We're actively working on better multi-jurisdiction support —including jurisdiction-specific risk rules (GDPR for EU contracts, different liability standards for common law vs. civil law systems) and native-language UI.
