Hi all! 💜 Have you ever wondered how much harder learning to code is for people who DON’T speak English? All programming terminology is universally in English. We take `head`, `const`, `background-color`, `return` and `private` for granted when learning how to code, allowing us to program more intuitively. But what about kids, students and beginners who also have to overcome the English language barrier? Introducing Codelingo (beta*), the free (web) app that helps non-English speakers start their coding journey by demystifying programming terminology into their native language. Users can learn through cheat sheets, flashcards, and interactive quizzes. ✨ Codelingo is on a mission to level the playing field between English and non-English speakers by making coding accessible for free to millions of people in the developing world. 🌍 If you’d like to support the mission (thank you 🥹), please share this with just one person you think could benefit from it. * This release is a beta MVP, which means it will only be available in Thai, for HTML. Plans to expand to other languages (Spanish, Mandarin etc) and courses (CSS, JS, Python etc) are on the horizon (as are additional features to teach coding concepts once users overcome the language barrier), but will be heavily subject to feedback and the success of this version. (Why Thailand first? I’m half Thai 😊 so I’m able to create and verify the content myself. Spanish and Mandarin next because I also speak them (fluently and incredibly rusty respectively). If you have expertise on what would be a better market to target, I’m all ears!!!! 🫶🏼) Thank you so much for checking this out. All feedback, thoughts and comments welcome!

💡 Bright idea
This looks like a really exciting project! Is there any way I can support, perhaps by adding more languages? I could contribute by adding German. Let me know if that would be helpful!
Emily
@tuffzcom Thanks so much for the support Eric! 😍🙏 That's so kind of you 🥹 You know what, I've actually thought about German (my husband is German, as is the company I work for!), but dismissed it because I assumed there wouldn't be a market. I assumed that the general level of English is pretty high amongst Germans, so something like this wouldn't be needed there. What do you think? 💡
Eric Büttner
Hi @_emily_daykin! 😊 You’re absolutely right that younger generations in Germany generally have good English skills. However, I can imagine that for older generations, English might not be as strong. 🇩🇪 A lot of people can understand basic English or enough for things like memes, but it often doesn’t go much further. That’s why I believe there’s still a potential market for German(y)! 💡 Let me know if you decide to explore this, I’d love to help out! 🙌
Emily
@tuffzcom Ooh thanks so much for the insight, Eric!! Really interesting to hear your perspective and I'm excited now thinking about the German market prospect! I will definitely keep you in mind down the line if/when it comes to German 🥹🤩 Thanks so much again for your support! 🙏

this is so neat

This looks absolutely amazing!! The idea of combining the learning of English with code is incredibly cool! I'm living in Spain and teaching how to code and I've noticed that some people here, when learning how to code are often not actually understanding the keywords in the programming language they're using, but instead just learning them by heart. This could be really useful!
Emily
@niklas_fischer Thank you so much for your support! 🤩 Spanish is next on the roadmap, so that's super encouraging to hear 😍 Learning by heart defeats the joy of learning, so I hope this app can ease the first few steps!

Absolutely nice idea, although thai is not my language, I really like the idea of making the entrance barrier more fun! Keep Going, can be big.

Wow, Emily! 💜 Codelingo is such an inspiring initiative! It’s incredible to think about the barriers non-English speakers face when learning to code. By demystifying programming terminology in their native languages, you’re truly opening doors for so many aspiring coders. I love the idea of using cheat sheets and quizzes to make the learning process engaging and accessible. Can’t wait to see how Codelingo grows with more languages and concepts in the future! Keep up the fantastic work, and I’ll definitely share this with anyone who could benefit from it! 🌟
Emily
