We re launching Canvasly Web Studio on Product Hunt today, and I wanted to share a few technical and design lessons we picked up along the way for anyone else building desktop applications or local-first SaaS tools.
Why build desktop when everyone goes Web/SaaS?
When we started, almost everyone recommended building another browser-based SaaS. But testing existing builders revealed two main friction points:
Memory & Performance: Heavy canvas editors inside browser tabs often slow down, especially when managing multiple assets or pages locally.
Data Ownership & Lock-in: Users want the ability to export ultra-clean static HTML5 or lightweight WordPress layouts without paying a perpetual monthly cloud tax just to keep their pages live.
Visual website builder for Windows and an alternative to WordPress page builder plugins. Design with freehand drag-and-drop, then export clean static HTML, CSS and JS, or WordPress pages and posts.
