Would You Drop Part of Your Audience for better content Security?
There’s always this awkward trade-off between compatibility and security when it comes to protected video playback.
Take screenshot prevention as an example. In reality, it only works reliably on a limited set of environments — mainly iOS (Safari), Android (Chrome), macOS (Safari) and Windows (Edge). Outside of those, you just can’t guarantee it.
So you end up in a tricky spot:
If you enforce strict security, some users simply won’t be able to watch the content at all
If you open it up for broader compatibility, you lose that level of protection
You still have an option for strong protection where it’s supported, and a fallback experience if its not provided. For example have HD quality for strictest policy and SD and lower for "security not compatible" devices.. But then again it depends on the content, as sometimes main value for the video comes not from its picture quality level. Good example all the E-learning platforms... In this case you kind of have to enforce the strictest policy to ensure the content wont get stolen..
Would you rather lose 30% of your viewers or risk losing 100% of your content? Where do you draw the line? :-/
