Booksie - - A daily reading habit that takes over your screen

by•
Booksie opens at the time you choose and blocks other apps until you hit your daily goal: 5 to 30 minutes, or a set number of pages. Reads EPUB, PDF, DOCX and articles. Free, no account, your library stays on your computer. Mac and Windows.

Hi Product Hunt, I'm Tobie, and I made Booksie. Booksie is a daily reading app with one blunt idea. At the time you choose, it opens over your screen and blocks clicks to other apps until you've hit your goal, either 5 to 30 minutes or a set number of pages. Then it hands your computer back. How it works: - You pick a time or a window. It fires once a day, even after a reboot. - It opens your current book, shows your streak, and tracks progress. - It reads EPUB, PDF, DOCX and article links. You can also search free books and add one from inside the app. - Listening counts. Booksie can read a section aloud with the voices already on your computer, and finishing by ear finishes the session. What it can't do, because I'd rather you hear it from me: it does not lock you out. Neither macOS nor Windows lets an app do that. You can Force Quit on a Mac or use Task Manager on Windows. If you do, the session stays incomplete, your streak breaks, and Booksie fires again next launch. If you really can't read tonight, End Session lets you pick a new time and keeps the pages you've read. It's completely free, there's no account, and your books and progress stay on your computer. Mac (macOS 12 or later, Intel and Apple silicon) and Windows 10/11. Linux is next. PS: There's currently book-listening implemented... but it's quite terrible, would fix that in later updates, just wanted to get this out. Two things I'd like to know: 1. Is 5 pages the right default, or would you start lower or higher? 2. What should Booksie do on the day you truly can't read? I'll be here all day. Tell me what's broken.
