BillBoard was inspired by a problem we saw in our own school community: people cared about politics, but most did not actually know what was happening in Congress beyond the biggest headlines. Congressional bills are often long, confusing, and written in legal language, which makes it hard for everyday people to understand what their representatives are voting on. We built BillBoard to make legislation easier to access. The goal was to turn complex bills into clear summaries, key impacts, passage estimates, and simple tools for civic action. At first, we focused mainly on bill summaries, but as we tested it with students and users, we realized people also needed context, explanations, and ways to respond. That pushed us to add features like impact breakdowns, representative outreach, and clearer bill status tracking. Over time, BillBoard evolved from a simple civic information tool into a broader nonpartisan platform for understanding, tracking, and engaging with legislation.
