bento.travel - Essential local apps for travelers in 101 countries

by•
Land somewhere new and you have no idea which apps work there. Is it Uber or Grab? Which payment app do locals use? Is WhatsApp the default, or LINE? Bento answers that for 101 countries: ride hailing, payments, messaging, navigation, transit, food delivery and more, hand reviewed per country. The useful part is what it rules OUT. It tells you when an app does not work somewhere, and flags gotchas like apps that need a local bank account or phone number. Free, no signup, 8 languages.

Hey Product Hunt šŸ‘‹ Bento started as a note on my phone. Every time I landed somewhere new I ended up doing the same frantic research in the arrivals hall. Is Uber a thing here or is it Grab? Can I tap my card, or does everyone use a QR app I have never heard of? Is WhatsApp the default, or LINE, KakaoTalk, Zalo, Viber? The answers exist, but they are scattered across Reddit threads from 2021 and blog posts nobody has updated since. So I turned the note into a site. Bento is a directory of the apps that actually matter in each country. 101 countries so far, with categories like ride hailing, payments, messaging, navigation, transit, food delivery and super apps. A few things I tried to get right: šŸ± It tells you what does NOT work. "Uber does not operate here" is more useful than another list of 40 apps. šŸ± Every country is hand reviewed, not scraped. Apps come with a pro tip covering the specific gotcha, like needing a local bank account or a domestic phone number. šŸ± No signup, free, and available in 8 languages. šŸ± Built to be read in 30 seconds on airport wifi. What I would love from you: pick a country you know well and roast the page for it. If I got something wrong, or missed the app everyone actually uses, tell me. Same goes for categories I am missing. Thanks for taking a look šŸ™
