Barely Cook was inspired by something very personal. My daughter recently started college. During her freshman year, she had to live on campus in a small dorm room. Like many students, her class schedule changes every day. Some days start early, others run late into the evening. Between classes, assignments, and endless homework, there is hardly a fixed time to eat or rest. Cooking quickly became a challenge. She shares a room with a roommate, and their tiny setup only has a microwave and a small hot plate. No full kitchen. No fancy appliances. And like many students living away from home for the first time, neither of them had much cooking experience. Most evenings, when they opened the fridge, they had the same problem. A few random ingredients but no idea what to make with them. The easiest solution became ordering food through Uber Eats or DoorDash. It was convenient, especially with their unpredictable schedules, but it was also expensive and not always the healthiest option. As a parent, it was hard to watch that become the default choice almost every other day. Whenever my daughter tried to cook, she ran into another problem. Most recipes on the internet or in cooking apps are simply not designed for beginners. They often require a long list of ingredients, complicated steps, or equipment that students just do not have in a dorm room. She would often say, "I just wish there was something simple that tells me what I can cook with what I already have." That idea stayed with me. What if there was an app designed specifically for situations like this? Something simple. Something practical. Something that works with the ingredients already in your kitchen and the appliances you actually have. That is how Barely Cook was born. The goal was simple. Create an app where someone can quickly select the ingredients they have and the appliances available to them, whether it is a microwave, a hot plate, an air fryer, or a toaster. In seconds, the app generates a super simple recipe with just a few easy steps. No complicated techniques. No long ingredient lists. Just practical meals that anyone can make. Barely Cook was built for students in dorm rooms, busy people with little time, beginners learning to cook, and anyone who wants to make something simple without feeling overwhelmed. If it helps students cook one more meal at home instead of ordering takeout, saves them a little money, and gives them confidence in the kitchen, then Barely Cook has done exactly what it was meant to do.
