Apple® announced that Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become Apple’s next chief executive officer effective on September 1, 2026. The transition, which was approved unanimously by the Board of Directors, follows a thoughtful, long-term succession planning process.
Cook will continue in his role as CEO through the summer as he works closely with Ternus on a smooth transition. As executive chairman, Cook will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world.
Just in time for Ternus to usher in a new era for Apple and a revamped Siri in the age of AI at WWDC, in its 50th year.

Ternus’s hardware background suggests a continued focus on Apple Silicon and in-house chips, that's a cautious move for Apple, which has lagged behind in AI recently.
And Cook moving into policy is a smart fit. With the EU’s DMA and U.S. antitrust issues looming, having someone who knows the company’s full operations in-house is more reliable than hiring an outside firm.
As for Siri, I think Ternus might bring in an external team to fill the gap, let's see!

Wow, I find it a very interesting decision changing the CEO considering we are at an inflexion point, it suggests what he does will likely have great impact on the future of Apple as a key player post-bubble and coming from hardware feels just right. I perceive the only danger is that if things take a radical new turn, he likely won't be able to match it as he doesn't come off aggressive like Satya or Steve but still overall feels strongly right given NVIDIA is the most valuable company right now.
