Hey everyone,
I'm the founder of this product. It's a job board for anon friendly jobs. I'm here all day to hear your thoughts and answer your questions, so fire away!
Anon friendly work in 2022 is like remote work in 2012.
I built this product because I was looking for anon friendly jobs myself and found it tough. There was no site where they were all aggregated. I thought other people probably have the same problem so I worked to build and release something that solves it once and for all.
"The future is already here — it's just not very evenly distributed". I think that quote best describes the current state of anon friendly work. Right now it seems like a strange, gimmicky, niche. But I think it's a trend that will grow so quick and so large, that eventually any job that can be done pseudonymously (which is most jobs) will be.
What is an anon friendly job?
An "anon friendly" job is a job where you can work pseudonymously i.e. not under your legal identity. There's different degrees of anon friendliness. It exists on a spectrum. A super anon friendly job will let you work pseudonymously and never ask you to disclose any information tied to your legal identity. An “anon friendly lite” job might just mean that you don’t need to disclose your legal identity to colleagues but others in the organization (eg execs and HR) still need to know it.
Why would you want an anon friendly job?
In a few years, revealing your legal identity for work will seem as silly as sharing your SSN online. Your legal identity is tied to so much sensitive personal information. Information that, if exposed to the wrong people, could put your security, safety, and privacy, at risk. Pseudonymous identities act as a layer of protection.
Another great benefit is that it forces employers to be more meritocratic. Can't discriminate > don't discriminate. You're judged only by the quality of your character, not by your background, your appearance, or anything else.
Okay, but who would hire people working under pseudonyms (anons)?
Turns out, many organizations! More than I had realised, actually. You can browse anonfriendly.com to see some of them. It's especially popular in web3. Organizations like LooksRare (Opensea competitor), DefiLlama (DeFi), Flashbots (Ethereum), and Yearn (DeFi), all hire anons.
Working pseudonymously protects your safety, security, and privacy. The best candidates recognise that, want that, and will adopt that. Being anon friendly is a competitive advantage for employers. Anon friendly employers will get the best candidates. Organizations that are not yet anon friendly will have to change in order to have a chance of hiring top talent.
Are you already pseudonymous?
Most of us already have pseudonymous identities! Consider your Twitter handle. Your GitHub. Your Product Hunt handle. Your Instagram. Many of us are recognised by our account handles, which are often names other than our legal identities. Think about your username in games! Another reason that makes me suspect that pseudonyms will catch on in the workplace, and beyond, is that so much of culture is downstream from the internet. And pseudonyms are already abundant on the internet.
Some extra notes
Working under a pseudonym is just step one. You could also use an avatar and voice modulator on calls.
Consider Ironmouse, the first female Twitch streamer to surpass 100,000 paying subscribers. According to an article from The Information she is a "mysterious Puerto Rican woman with an immunodeficiency disease who streams to millions from her bed ... [concealed] behind a cartoonized virtual character that mimics her real-time movements using motion-capture technology, Ironmouse has become the world’s most prominent VTuber, or virtual YouTuber—a new kind of influencer who’s all but unrecognizable to the people who follow her."
Expect many more pseudonymous celebrities.
Expect many more anon friendly jobs.
So, what do you think? Let me know. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
