Hi everyone, first off thanks to @david_diam for hunting this and @erictwillis for creating the #pre-ph channel.
About 4 weeks ago, it was my last day in San Francisco and I decided to stroll up to the Ferry Building to try Blue Bottle’s coffee (it’s heavenly btw; no offence to Philz). I sat outside and pondered how I could take our hackathon search engine for Europe to the next level (www.hackevents.co). I thought of something that was definitely not an original idea. There is Magic, Native, Postmates, now Operator, and probably many more that service on-demand requests. 200OK is a niche product for developers and hackathon goers.
In the spirit of “The Rise of the Developer”, I want every hacker to be able to discover and win his next hackathon, introduce him to people that matter to him, and help fix bugs in his program (be an “on-demand stackoverflow”).
So I literally ran back to SOMA, past AT&T Park where the Giants dominated that noon, picked up my laptop, and sat down at Philz Coffee on 4th and Berry.
When they kicked me out at 8pm (they were closing…), I had finished most of the code base for what is now 200OK. I knew I wanted to get the app as quickly as possible out to my friends and their friends. All I had left to do was the layout optimization for other iPhone sizes and to make it “App Store-ready”, which took me another arduous three days after arriving back in Munich.
As @sridhar_kondoji has already correctly assessed, it’s a lightweight app of less than 4MB with NO SIGNUP and IMMEDIATE ADDED VALUE.
I do wanna mention my stack because I want to encourage everyone who thinks making apps is hard to just go out and do it!
Backend: Parse, because I do almost everything on iOS with Parse <3
Messaging Backend: SupportKit & Slack, two ninjas of messaging. I use Layer on a different project and tried to apply it to 200OK, but I found SupportKit to be better suited for my ambitious deployment goal.
Language: Objective-C
And for anyone who has wondered about the name – 200OK – it’s inspired by the HTTP Status Code for a successful request ;-)
Thank you so much for trying my app.
