Hello there! (General Kenobi). There is no points for guessing what today’s product highlight is about. Of course, I’m talking about yesterday’s OpenAI event. But first…

The headlines:

📅 As if the OpenAI event wasn’t exciting enough, Google IO is happening today.

📹 TikTok is testing a new AI-powered search functionality

🍎 Apple launched a new game that’s very reminiscent of Wordle.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT
OpenAI has come out swinging with its latest model launch

Over the past few months, the tech world has been treated to new AI models from Meta, Anthropic, Mistral, and Google. All with varying degrees of speed and ability, and some giving GPT-4 a run for its money. OpenAI’s answer? Relative silence. Until yesterday, that is.

The AI company held its spring update event yesterday. Despite all the rumors that the company would launch an AI-powered search or GPT-5, the big news was that a new flagship LLM called GPT-4o would power ChatGPT.

The new model is similar to GPT-4 in intelligence but is “much faster” and improves “capabilities across text, vision, and audio,” according to CTO Mira Murati. Throughout the live-streamed event, members of the OpenAI team showed off the model’s abilities.

What really stood out was the improved voice handling. ChatGPT has long had a voice option, but GPT-4o massively improves it. For example, users can ask the model a question and mid-answer, interrupt the model to divert the conversation or correct it.

During the demo, the team stressed how much more human this new model is by showcasing its emotional reasoning capabilities and even doubling down on the whole Her’ comparisons by demoing an assistant that observes the world around you and responds in real time. It even sounded similar to Scarlett Johanson’s character in the movie.

GPT-4o is rolling out to all paid and free users of ChatGPT now, plus the company’s API for developers to tinker with. Alongside the model launch, OpenAI also announced a new desktop app which is rolling out on Mac first — kind of ironic since Microsoft has been bankrolling them.
