How important is UI/UX for an app?

Extremely important for post-MVP phases. MVPs shouldn't focus on delivering world class UI. UX, however, starts way before your users begin to use the app. Make promises that you can live up to and change your user's life. When your UX is nothing but a fancy UI but can't make meaningful change to your user's, you have nothing but a cool looking frontend.

I read somewhere this line "Design used to be the seasoning you’d sprinkle on for taste; now it’s the flour you need at the start of the recipe". And i think this is more than enough to know that how important UI/UX is in today's world.

Apps basically depend on UI/UX.

Glad that you asked this question. UX is extremely important for the product to succeed. We revamped our UX a few months ago and saw a whooping 50% increase in conversions just because of this. Retention also improves significantly with a solid UX. I can't insist more on having a great UX.

I'd say it's the most important but not for idea validation in your MVP. Idea validation is to see if your idea solves the problem and if there's any appetite to purchase. Unless your product is directly tied to UX (like a no-code product for example) then it can wait a bit. But your UX is the first thing people see and it directly connects with people's emotions. People buy with their emotions first and justify with logic later.

They complain if it fails to solve their problems, or hinders them getting the job done, or inconveniences them. UI An app that looks ugly will put people off, but not as much as you think (hence 20%).

You are designing an interface wether you like it or not. The only question is wether you’ll do it intentionally and with quality or not. So I guess you just have to ask yourself, do I care about the way customers interface with my product or not

It is necessary to make an app interesting for users. More satisfied users -> more recommendations to users' friends/teammates etc. -> more downloads and purchases!
