About

Building software since 1999. Founder of Codalio in Sudbury, Ontario. AI can generate code in minutes, but code without a spec is a demo, not a product. When nobody has written down the users, the data, the edge cases, and the compliance rules, every AI-generated feature is a guess, and the rework costs more than the build. Codalio starts with the PRD, so what gets built is secure, deployable, and what the founder actually meant. Here to find tools that take building seriously and to swap notes with founders shipping real products.

Founders building with AI: at which feature did your app start breaking itself?

The demo works on Saturday. By feature four, every new prompt breaks something that used to work.

I've heard that story from founder after founder, and it's never the model's fault. Nothing ever wrote down what the product actually is. No requirements, no spec, no definition of done. So every prompt is a fresh guess, and guesses don't add up to a system.

Senior engineers have always started from the spec. Most people building with AI skip it, because no tool made them do it.

So, for everyone here who has shipped something with AI:

What do you use to vibe-code applications?

I have used a few products to vibe-code my applications. The first one I used was Chatgpt. From this, I created my first application and it had a very average UI. I was using nextjs for frontend and backend, so for me, the backend part took time but it was decent.
The second product which is good enough for me currently is Gemini. This creates a very good UI and backend at the same time. The first time I used it, it was a super upgrade in the UI. I also used Lovable to create one practice project, but I don't know why I did not used again.

I also heard people's suggestion of using different AI's like claude, cursor etc. but moving in to a different platform has some friction.
What AI is most used or easiest to build an application? I recently heard of a new AI called Emergent, which creates the whole application with a single prompt.

Codalio - Spec-first AI software factory: idea to tested code

Most AI builds break around feature four because nothing ever defined the product. Codalio starts there. Describe your idea in plain English and it writes a validated PRD and spec: user flows, data model, user stories and acceptance criteria. It then generates code against that spec, writes the tests from the same criteria, and traces every change back to a requirement before the merge. Codalio Cloud takes you 95–98% of the way to production grade. Start with a free PRD.
