Laid off at 37 after 13 years in software — how do you rebuild as an indie?

Hey everyone. I'm a software engineer with 13 years of experience, mostly backend and architecture work. But honestly, I feel like my career might be ending.

My company is struggling, the economy where I live isn't great, and at 37 I've found that finding a new job is... not realistic anymore. Companies here want younger and cheaper.

So lately I've been trying to build my own thing to get out of this situation. I'm working on a small tool site (planning to launch it on Hypership Day, actually), and experimenting with ad networks for monetization. Small steps.

But I'll be honest: most days I can't see any hope in this. I don't know if I'm on the right path, or just wasting my runway. I don't know what I should do next.

Is anyone else getting tired of all in one productivity apps?

I spent the last few months trying to shift my entire workflow into a single workspace that handles notes, tasks, calendar, and docs. They always feel amazing for the first two weeks, but then the complexity sets in and the slow mobile apps start wasting more time than they save.

I recently went back to using a few simple, dedicated tools (a lightweight notepad and a separate task app).

Honestly, using fast, single-purpose apps feels way less stressful than managing one massive system.

Will brands still need to shoot ads?

I was looking at @Higgsfield and other AI video tools recently.

You can now create an ad without organizing a real shoot. Higgsfield also has tools specifically built to generate product ads from existing assets. A normal shoot means finding a location, people, equipment, then filming and editing everything. Now you can test different versions before doing any of that.

I don't think real shoots are going away, but I can see brands doing a lot less of them.

When would you still choose a real shoot over AI?
