I built USBNET to solve a real problem at my school. The computer lab has many PCs that don't support creating Wi-Fi hotspots because that feature is disabled by school policy. At the same time, the school's Wi-Fi network only allows registered PCs to connect, so Android devices cannot access the internet directly. To work around this limitation, I developed USBNET, which shares a Windows PC's internet connection with an Android device over a USB cable using reverse tethering. This provides a fast and stable connection without requiring a hotspot or changes to the school's network configuration. Once connected, the Android device can also share that connection with other devices through its own Wi-Fi hotspot. During development, the project evolved from a simple proof of concept into a complete application with automatic device detection, configurable network settings, DNS options, and an Android helper app that creates the VPN tunnel required for reverse tethering. The focus throughout the project was to make the setup as simple and reliable as possible so anyone could connect with just a few clicks.
