Hey Sam, discovered you guys through Hustle Con. Really interesting to read your aspirations to become the media company for younger entrepreneurs. Was that the goal from Day 1? Or a more recent pivot?
@sapphli Hey hey - I think I had two personal goals from day one: to put on concerts and to finance cool music, art, and film. To me, conferences are close to concerts, which is why I wanted to do it, and media is a no brainer next step.
As a company, our goal is to positively impact 100's of millions of people each mouth. A media company seems like the obvious way to do that. Plus, it's fun as hell.

Congrats on the launch of The Hustle @thesamparr. Beautiful design, and some compelling, original material. When are we going to see stories of non-white, non-male entrepreneurs grace your pages? Would love to throw my support behind an insurgent publication that truly breaks the mold.
@chikodi That's a good question and something that keeps me up at night, and a question that (i think) is much bigger than it appears. In the past, we've had about 50% non-white speakers at our conference, Hustle Con. We didn't have as many woman as we wanted, but the fact is that there aren't as many women founders as men.
As for getting more diversity on the site, that's another thing we are actively trying to fix. We are a young and lean company and have had limited amounts of content, but I agree that the lack of diversity blows.
So, long story short, I know this is a problem and it's one we're trying to fix. Interestingly though, of the +500k visitors we've had in the last few weeks, 85% of them were men, while 5 out of 7 of our fulltime staff is women. Go figure.

@thesamparr Thanks for your response, and thanks for letting us see under the hood! Awareness is crucial to inspiring new generations, and new populations of entrepreneurs to join our community. I hope you will press on with your commitment to include more voices of hustlers as you and the team continue to grow.
Thanks for posting us Jack. Hey everyone, I'm one of the people who makes The Hustle. We started as a conference but are now taking our stab at building a big ole media company like Vice.
I'll be checking out these comments throughout the day, but we wrote this post explaining our progress over our first two months in business: http://thehustle.co/the-first-2-...
A few highlights:
- 500,000+ visitors
- 20,000 emails
- Not sure what else to put here, but these lists look better in threes.
Anyway, if you have any questions you can holler here or email me at sam@hustlecon.com
The Hustle certainly has been hustling! They launched only a few months ago, but they are executing beautifully-- and hilariously. Their emails and articles are extremely well written, I can't wait to see how they continue to grow.
I've been hooked on The Hustle since day one. Sam and the team do a fantastic job of catering to the target audience. I've noticed the subtle changes in the logo, the site, and the emails and I think everything is fantastic. I hope the team keeps up the momentum.
Always a bit wary when a company asks me to give over my e-mail address without any other info... but I love Vice so thought this would be interesting. Imagine my delight when I saw that entering my e-mail gave me access to back issues :D
@rossdcurrie you can view the back issues without entering your email address; just scroll down. Many companies have started using this 'doormat' feature.
