I was a self employed van driver. Every January is the same story dread, panic, a spreadsheet I barely kept up with, and an accountant bill for someone to add up numbers I could have done myself.
A few weeks ago I posted on Reddit asking if anyone actually enjoys their Self Assessment. It got 2,100 views in a few hours. Every single comment said the same thing - the existing tools all feel like they were built for someone sitting in an office, not someone doing 10 hours in a van.
So I built TaxPot in a day using my existing stack from a previous project.
The core idea is simple. Instead of forms, bank feeds, and dashboards you just tell it what happened today. "Did three jobs, made £280, spent £58 on fuel." Done in 10 seconds. It logs everything, calculates your tax pot, tracks mileage at 45p/mile, and knows every HMRC deadline.
There are 4.2 million sole traders in the UK. Making Tax Digital is mandatory from April 2026. Most of them are either paying an accountant unnecessarily or just winging it.
TaxPot is for the plasterer, the hairdresser, the dog groomer, the van driver. The people who are great at their trade and terrible at paperwork.
