tamfinder helps founders figure out whether their startup is actually venture-scale or better suited for bootstrapping. Describe your startup in one sentence and you'll get a comprehensive market analysis with TAM calculated using both top-down and bottom-up approaches, clickable source citations for every major figure, competitor and funding analysis, and a clear verdict that classifies the opportunity as VC-scale, Bootstrappable, Crowded, or Too Niche.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I learnt about the power of TAM during my time at YC in SF.
The bigger the TAM, the bigger the dream because a genuinely large market changes how investors look at your company, how you hire, and even how ambitious you allow yourself to be. The TAM slide isn't just another slide in a deck because it's the size of the opportunity you're asking people to believe in.
But over the years I also realised that not every business is VC-fundable and not every business needs to be.
A $60M market with great margins can be an incredible bootstrapped business while still being a poor venture bet, but most founders never find out which one they're building because almost every tool, and even most chatbots, will happily give them a big impressive number and leave them feeling validated.
That's why I built tamfinder because I wanted something that would tell founders what they actually needed to hear instead of what they wanted to hear.
You give it a one-line startup idea and in about a minute it gives you a report with TAM calculated both top-down and bottom-up so the numbers cross-check each other, every figure linked back to its source so you can verify it yourself, competitors and their funding history so you know who's already in the market, and finally a verdict that tells you whether it's VC-scale, Bootstrappable, Crowded, or Too Niche.
The part I'm happiest about is that "Bootstrappable" isn't treated as bad news because some of the best businesses in the world were never meant to raise venture capital, and knowing that early can save founders years of chasing the wrong path.
Could you do all of this with ChatGPT or Claude? Absolutely, and I did for a long time, but every conversation starts from scratch, which means you spend an hour refining prompts, checking sources, comparing numbers, and trying to work out what to trust. I wanted something that did all of that work consistently and in one place.
So if you have an idea you've been thinking about, or even one you abandoned a while ago, give it a try and see what comes back.
I'll be around in the comments all day, and if you think the numbers are wrong then tell me because that's genuinely the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

💡 Bright idea
the "not every business needs to be VC-fundable" framing is refreshing, most of these tools are built to flatter you into raising. question - when the top-down and bottom-up TAM numbers land far apart, what does the report do with that gap? average them, flag it as low-confidence, or show both and let you sit with the disagreement?
@galdayan This is done, now. Please check when convenient.

@jogindertanikella nice, glad it turned around quickly. will take a look and drop a review once I've had a chance to properly try the update, want it to reflect the actual fixed version not the old behavior

ran a one-liner about my idea and the bottom-up TAM actually matched what i'd scribbled in my notes, which felt oddly validating. loved that every number had a real source link behind it instead of just vibes.
@cengizgalerisi Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. Really glad to see how you used it and that it made a difference. Wishing you all the best for your idea! :)
