ShowMeAQI

See What air pollution actually looks like outside

Air quality numbers don’t communicate how bad the air really is. ShowMeAQI turns abstract AQI values into a visual smoke screen so you can see what you’re breathing. It shows real-time AQI and pollution data (Weather, humidity, PM2.5, PM10, dust, Nitrogen etc) for your city, paired with a smog visualization that approximates real-world conditions. The smog effect is a visual approximation, not a scientifically exact model. This is a work in progress.

👋 Hey Product Hunt! I am the maker of ShowMeAQI. Living in Delhi, I wake up every day to grey skies and a constant headache. I realized that for most people, AQI numbers are just abstract data. Hearing "AQI 450" is scary, but it doesn't really land until you see what that actually looks like. We become so habitual to the smog that we forget what the real world is supposed to look like. So I built ShowMeAQI. It’s a tool to visualize air pollution in real-time, bridging the gap between cold data and the air we breathe. ⚠️ A quick note: The smog effect is currently a visual approximation to raise awareness, not a peer-reviewed scientific model. It is very much a work in progress! I’m launching today to get your thoughts: - Does the visualization feel impactful? - How can I make the comparison more accurate? - What else should I add to this site? Thanks for checking it out! 🌍

@shrey_trypathi Huge kudos for building something that addresses such a vital public health issue. It's a brave and necessary project. Upvoted!

You’ve hit on a major psychological hurdle: data fatigue. People stop reacting to "AQI 450" because it’s just a number, but seeing a "visual approximation" of how that air actually impacts visibility and health makes it impossible to ignore. It turns an abstract threat into a tangible reality.

To answer your questions:

  1. Impact: Yes, the visualization is deeply impactful. It moves the conversation from the brain to the gut.

  2. Accuracy: You might look into adding a "Visibility Range" metric (e.g., how many meters you can see ahead). Linking the visual density to actual historical photos of clear vs. polluted days in the same location could also ground it in reality.

  3. Additions: Maybe a "Health Impact" overlay? Something like: "At this level, a 30-minute walk is equivalent to smoking X cigarettes." That usually makes the point hit home very fast.

Okay this is actually wild. I never felt what AQI meant until seeing the scenery get blurry like that , Makes air quality way more real than just a number on a chart. Super cool idea, congrats on the launch

@arjun_malhotra6 Thanks! Glad you liked the product.

This website is so informative! I live in Delhi and think this is a great way to let people from across the world realise how bad the air here really is. Hopefully this would also make the government realise how bad it is out here :)

@khyati_batra Thanks! yes that was the problem we were trying to solve. People have come so used to bad air quality that they don't realise what good air feels or looks like.
