Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I’m excited to share QuickMessage — a native, ultra-lightweight, and privacy-first text expander built specifically for macOS and Apple Silicon.
Why I built this
Every day, we type the same things over and over: email templates, master AI prompts for ChatGPT/Claude, code blocks, scheduling links, bank details, and canned replies.
Existing text expanders on Mac frustrated me for three reasons:
1. Bloated web wrappers: Many modern tools run on Electron, eating 250MB–450MB of RAM just to listen for shortcuts in the background.
2. Privacy concerns: A text expander has Accessibility permissions to read what you type. Having an app with its own third-party cloud servers and telemetry watching my keystrokes never felt right.
3. Expensive subscriptions: Paying $40+/year forever just to expand text shortcuts felt excessive.

I engineered QuickMessage from the ground up with a Rust core and a native Swift AppKit UI:
- Blazing Fast & Featherlight: <1ms expansion latency, <20MB RAM, and 0.0% idle CPU usage. Zero background battery drain.
- Instant Expansion Anywhere: Type `\` followed by your keyword (e.g., `\sig`, `\email`, `\prompt`) in Slack, Apple Mail, VS Code, Notion, Terminal, or any browser, and it expands in place.
- Floating Fuzzy Search: Forgot a shortcut? Just type `\` (or press `Ctrl + Shift + Space`) to summon a non-intrusive floating search bar right at your cursor.
- Dynamic Variables & Fill-in Forms: Insert dates, times, clipboard contents, custom cursor positions, or interactive fill-in fields on the fly.
- 100% Local & Private: Keystrokes never leave your Mac and are never logged to disk. Your local database is encrypted via macOS Keychain (AES-256-GCM).
- Private iCloud Sync: Syncs seamlessly across your Macs using your personal Apple CloudKit Private Database — no third-party accounts or vendor servers required.
