PayID is a protocol that connects siloed payment networks through a universal address. A PayID (e.g. alice$example.com) can map to the URL https://example.com/alice and resolve to Alice's address on an underlying payment network (e.g. bank or blockchain).

Isn't this what you get with PayPal? I mean you can go on Paypal and send money to my email address and I'll get it. The question is does this require registration with PayID to be able to pay.

@ianmayman PayID is an open protocol that doesn't require registration and works across any payment network, including PayPal. PayPal is a proprietary application that requires registration with PayPal, and only works with PayPal.

@ianmayman @rossdcurrie a PayID can only send/receive to another PayID. However, it's similar to email, as there's no central registrar, but rather a variety of registrars. Although if I don't want to register anywhere, then I can run my own PayID server, and still send/receive to other PayIDs.

Would it be possible to resolve a QR code to a PayID? I am constantly trying to think of innovative ways for people to tip a performer and a printed QR on a violin case or a "pass the QR code" instead of pass the hat...could be cool.

Wondering what’s the key value that payid can provide? Who would be your customers? Most countries have the payment system ID for instance IBAN,HK FPS Addressing. Why would the market use a new set of ID?
