👋 Hi all - I’m Felix, founder of Hanko. We’re a team of developers and designers, on a mission to revolutionize the way we authenticate online. Yesterday, iOS 16 was released globally. And with that, Apple has shipped passkeys – the official successor to the password – to our iPhones. That means starting today, you can experience the new standard for online authentication on your own devices and get a good idea how the login will soon evolve for the first time since the invention of the internet. We love passkeys and the technology behind it and decided to launch a live demo that lets you try passkeys on your devices. Right now. ✨ Not just a simple tech-demo Instead of just simply calling the passkey browser API to pop up a passkey dialogue, passkeys.io ships a complete passkey-enabled demo account. This is the only way to try out passkey sync features across multiple devices. For that, you’ll need an email address. But don’t worry, we’ll never use the data you put into passkeys.io for anything other than to allow you to use the passkey demo. From what we know, passkeys.io showcases the first-ever passkey-enabled login that lets you try all passkey capabilities in a real-life online account scenario. The demo is based on our open source authentication system Hanko (available on GitHub) and hosted by us on AWS servers. 🔑 What are passkeys? Passkeys are a new way to authenticate to websites and apps, designed to replace passwords and 2-factor authentication at the same time. Using passkeys means using your device’s biometric capabilities like Face ID and Touch ID to sign you in securely. With passkeys, you don’t have to come up with a new password for each service, and you don’t have to remember any passwords, because your devices take care of creating, managing, and syncing your passkeys. Different from passwords, passkeys never have to be shared with any website or app. Instead, they only exist on your devices and make use of cryptographic algorithms to assert ownership of a passkey without having to share the passkey itself. That makes passkeys much more secure than passwords, and even more secure than common 2-factor authentication methods like SMS codes or Authenticator apps. The biometrics that are used for a passkey are exactly the same that you use to unlock your devices, and no biometric data will ever be shared in the process. 🤖🪟 What about Android, Mac, and Windows? No worries, you’re not left behind. You can still try the passkeys.io demo on Android, macOS, and Windows and even use biometric authentication. All platforms already support WebAuthn, the API behind passkeys, for quite some time. What’s not yet there is the ability to sync your passkeys across your devices and the UI does not explicitly say “passkeys”. macOS 13 (“Ventura”) is expected to be released in October with full passkey support. Both Google and Microsoft have publicly announced passkey support coming later this year or early next year to Android and Windows. 🚀 Try passkeys now Head over to passkeys.io and create your first passkey now. We’re super excited to get your feedback and answer any questions you may have. 👉 https://www.passkeys.io 👈 Hopefully you’ll share our enthusiasm for passkeys after trying the demo and join us in our effort to bring passkeys to every login ❤️
