@Legendary_Shane - True! I use Umano all the time, passively listening to articles and blog posts while cooking, getting dressed, showering, etc. Here's a quick thought:
What if what you recorded, automatically went online without previews or confirmation? By removing peoples' ability to "perfect" their recordings and accept real, unedited audio, you may encourage more creation. Additionally, you may want to explore private messaging (perhaps one-to-many, a la Snapchat).
I'm riffing here without knowing your vision or target audience but curious to hear your thoughts and other ideas you've considered.
Welcome, @Legendary_Shane! I briefly played with the app earlier today. I have some initial thoughts but curious where the inspiration for it came from. Why did you build it?
@Legendary_Shane - I love it when people use other platforms/products as a prototype to validate the idea. That's how Product Hunt started and as I learned today from @mckaythomas (http://www.producthunt.co/posts/826), First Opinion used MessageMe as their MVP.
How are people using the service? I can see this being used for micro-podcasts (@joelgascoigne used to do these frequently) or for entertainment.
@Legendary_Shane - TBH, I'm self-conscious when recording my voice. When using the service, I found myself frequently deleting and re-recording myself after stumbling over my words.
Consumption is also much more difficult than Twitter. You can't listen to audio in as many contexts as you can read.
In other words, I believe creation and consumption will be much lower than text-based communication like Twitter. Do you see this as a problem? If so, how do you make it easier to create and consume?
@rrhoover These are a few things we've realized too.
So first of all, in regards to text being easier to consume, audio actually has areas where it has an advantage. For example, you can listen to it passively, and actually that's a feature users have requested - to be able to listen to it out of app during times like commuting.
As for the friction that exists for recording, we're exploring a) making private accounts and b) Facebook and contact integration to make sure your audience are familiar friends. We're testing these ideas out and suspect they'll remove the barrier for recording. But I'd love to hear your thoughts - what do you think?
@rrhoover Initially, we were just recording personal voice memos on SoundCloud. We started sharing some of them to Facebook and to our surprise, got pretty strong reception. We spent two weeks building a very minimal iPhone app to use with our friends and have been iterating and growing since.
