Short version: LumenRead is a free reading-speed trainer that actually checks whether you understood what you read — and it works in English, Chinese, and Japanese.

I built it because I read across English and Chinese every day, and every speed-reading tool I found had the same two blind spots. They're English-only — word-based WPM simply doesn't apply to character-based languages like 中文 and 日本語 — and they train raw speed while ignoring comprehension, so you "read faster" and understand less.

So here's the loop I built instead: paste any text, drop a .txt/.md file, or pick an article → read in word or sentence mode at your target pace → answer 3 AI-generated comprehension questions → get your real speed (WPM or CPM), comprehension score, and specific advice.

It's completely free, no signup. Your text is used only to generate your questions — never stored. Feedback very welcome, especially on the question quality: too easy, too hard? What reading material would you throw at it? Happy to answer anything about the stack (Next.js + DeepSeek) too. 🙏
