If you like outliners, I think in 2027 this may be the best one out there.

Others I've tried: Tana, Remnote, Worflowy, Dynalist, Omnioutliner (Mac), Bike(Mac), TaskPaper(Mac) and several more. I've tried Obsidian with outliner plugins as well but I wanted something that could live filter tagged blocks (not entire notes) in the main window and treat blocks as first-class citizens.

For a while I really wanted to like Logseq but it was never convincing enough. However Workflowy and several others can't handle proper schema. This lead me to Tana and Remnote which I find very comprehensive and flexible but a bit overengineered and have "noisy" UI compared to the minimalism many outliner fans enjoy. They are also not offline-first.

So I kept my eye on Logseq and recently downloaded a new version (LogseqDB or Logseq DB version) which is some kind of complete rewrite (still in beta). If it wasn't still early, I would run with it. Tags that allow for schema like Tana's "supertags". Lovely simple database views with sort, filter, group, search. Automatic saving of .md files as backup (no longer the main source of truth since it now works from a DB). The CSS can be edited to your liking. Local-first and sync with E2EE. The only outliner I know that has a whiteboard where you can visually organise parts of your outline.

If you like apps like Anytype and Capacities and are longing for something faster / more text-based or you think Tana and Remnote aren't clean enough, I would say keep an eye on Logseq. New versio with limited features can be tried here at the moment (June 2026): https://test.logseq.com

I have been using Logseq for last couple months. It has been stellar. I have used it before desktop app has been realeased and code open sourced - Logseq team fullfilled promise of opensourcing code - which I respect. They keep delivering and building at really fast pace. It has come a long way even though it is still in beta. Beeing privacy focused and storing notes as plain text files makes it awesome for private and work related notes where SaaS apps are not an option. @tienson_qin and whole team are very responsive, friendly and community focused. I have seen bugs fixed in clouple of minutes from reporting in in discord. That's mindblowing. Logseq also does not go the vendor lock in route as files (.md or .org) just sit on your disk + export to json, edn or recently added opml format. As there are now many networked notes apps Logseq was the first one to implement new and unique features so it's definitely is not 'just an open source clone'. Some quirks here and there but it is full of features and stable for the beta.

Signed up for Product Hunt specifically so I could upvote and comment on Logseq. With a week or two under my belt, my first impressions are still fresh. Core philosophical feature: flexibility. You can take your notes in the widely known Markdown or the powerful Org file formats. You can define schemas, but you can also just add notes and define a schema when you decide you need one. It's all local, so you're not dependent on export tools or someone else's AWS budget to get at your stuff. The bulk of it is open source, so you can see how it works and offer fixes / features if you're the person with that sort of itch. It's a bit like this, and a bit like that. * a bit like Notion, if Notion would let you just start getting stuff done without creating a schema for every dang thing * a bit like Obsidian, if Obsidian defaulted to a rich interface and came bundled with templating, data, and outliner plugins (at least) * a bit like Emacs Org mode, if the org config was tuned by an expert for people who never heard of Org and it was rendered by something besides a generations-old document editing environment Features I love: * daily journal * deeply nested outlining * bi-directional links (note A links to note B, and B's details show that A links to it) * shortcuts for common needs like date entry, task management, embedded media * task management, with scheduling, prioritization, status and notes * term properties and templates; handy for bookmarks or tasks that map to work tickets * live query language for finding and displaying those tasks, bookmarks, etc * the graph is pretty; nicer than Roam's, much nicer than Org-Roam's, not *quite* as nice as Obsidian's The biggest challenges: stability and documentation. Logseq is brand-new and improving literally every day, but you're going to bump into quirks and confusion. Hint: "..." menu -> "All graphs" -> "Re-index" resolves most of the hiccups I see in my day. The documentation is also improving quickly, and you can also find excellent videos on using Logseq by folks like OneStutteringMind and Santi Younger. To sum up: yeah, try it out!

@tiensonqin I had to learn about it, since I spent half a day going "all my notes should be in Org wait no maybe Markdown hang on no I better stick with Org" My usage patterns confuse *any* application. Glad Logseq had a quick option to clean up my mess!

An absolutely great note taking app, consider the fact that it's (free and) open source too. Recommend this to whoever that likes a Roam-like workflow and it works well with Org Mode too, providing a modern interface too it and you can use it with Emacs together.

I've been using Logseq for a few months together with obsidian and slowly I'm moving more of my studying to Logseq. The pace of development is incredibly fast, so much is improving every month. I highly recommend checking out the discord server as well - the developers are very responsive and you can tell that they're not just saying it here, but they really care a lot about openness, privacy, and their community.

What makes Logseq what it is, is how the tool came to be, the founder and the team of developers, in addition to Logseq being a fantastic note-taking tool. The apps (web and dektop) are a breeze to use and with each update comes further stability and new features. Logseq is local first (you are in control of your notes) with notes being saved in plain text files in both Markdown and Org Mode formats means that you are not tied into proprietary software – you can easily transfer your notes somewhere else or even open them with Notepad. There are many, many features available in Logseq and I have listed below what I consider to be the main ones: - Ease of writing notes – open up and off you go - Outliner – Can structure your notes how you wish - Focus mode – click on a bullet point to focus on that text - Collapse / expand – easily expand and collapse blocks of notes to see what is of interest to you in a given moment - Note linking – create links between notes at both a page and block-level - Backlinking – easily see which pages and block link to the page - Sidebar actions – see recent notes or open a note in the sidebar allowing you to work on - two notes (or more) at once - Embed block – include an embed of a block in another page where you can edit the contents which will be reflected in the original note - To-do list – easily create to-do lists - Graph View – Visualise a page or your notes collection in a graph - Favourites – editable list of favourite notes in an easy to reach location The ease of using the app and freedom of writing notes and the amazing features that Logseq add to the table to generate ideas from your notes are second to none. The features make this one of the best note-taking apps / tools out there, and with a few more tweaks and improvements, Logseq will only be setting the bar higher.

As an org-mode fan, it's really nice to see logseq. Easy to use(emacs is great, but hard to configure), and modern UI application. I just need to focus on thinking and writing. I think Logseq will almost be my last note-taking app. BTW, wish macOS desktop app could be more stable :p
