I've 10+ years building messaging infrastructure and security systems. I want to build something obviously good. A force for good. I built Klar for Apple Mail users who want a modern filter without sending messages to a third party to filter spam.
In practice that means: - A multilingual AI model that runs entirely on your Mac - Works with any account you read in Apple Mail, no account limitations - Flags or moves spam to Junk - No account and no automatic telemetry. The Mail extension has no network access. - Free on the Mac App Store - The engine is open source (Github)
A paid extension app is coming too to allow the AI model to learn overnight from your inbox.
I value all feedback. These are early days and questions and suggestions are make-or-break for me.
I will be here to answer questions. Be warned that this is just me and I don't use AI for this so replies might take a while :)

@nicolas_ha Congrats on the launch Nicolas! On-device filtering with an open-source engine is a combo you rarely see. I think that most spam tools want your whole inbox on their servers first - which is a big no-no from me.
The multilingual part caught my eye. I'm in Slovenia and get spam in Slovenian, English and the occasional very confident German, and most filters handle anything outside English pretty badly. How does the model do with smaller languages like that?
Love the idea. Upvoted!

@kastelicjakob Thanks! I lean on advances in AI models - they have a good understanding of natural languages.
The details are a bit tech-y and evolve all the time, right now I am leaning on a model called XML-RoBERTa amongst other things.
XLM-RoBERTa is a large multilingual masked language model trained on 2.5TB of filtered CommonCrawl data across 100 languages. It shows that scaling the model provides strong performance gains on high-resource and low-resource languages.
But I am completely open to feedback if you find out that some spams in Slovenian are not caught as they should feel free to forward them to spam@klar.im - this kind of feedback would be very valuable for me.

Solid product. Any plans to extend this to web-based email? Gmail especially

@davidoduk not for web-based email, google does not support custom email filtering software today. It works today with Apple Mail for Mac which can be used with gmail, but this is not web-based.

@nicolas_ha I didn't know that about Google. Interesting. I have a plugin I use today that's very integrated with gmail - Streak. Might be worth exploring. Good luck with the launch!
I love that this stays on my own device, best of luck with the launch. Are you considering a lifetime option, I'm tired of so many subscriptions?

@codeandsea I am actually! Still figuring out many the exact pricing, but I am considering: - a lifetime subscription - a decreasing yearly subscription
Would that work for you? Please consider subscribing to the newsletter in the footer of https://klar.im/
@nicolas_ha Thanks for the response. My preference is a lifetime plan but if not I tend to go with annual plans over monthly if there is now one time purchase. Will check out the newsletter.

@codeandsea Thanks for the clear feedback, I will definitely consider adding that. Obviously the newsletter will not send any spam ever ;) In fact I have never sent anything just yet.
i'm always paranoid about data privacy, so the fact that Klar does all its filtering on the device is kinda reassuring. makes me almost want to give it a shot, even though i'm terrible at managing my inbox.

@therayess Yes, privacy and security. This is made for the paranoids - I have always been very security conscious and as a software engineer I ended up working in regulated environments. I should write more actually about the privacy guarantees (because some of these are not just claims they are verifiable).

the idea of using AI to automatically sort out marketing emails without having to sign up for yet another account is actually tempting. i usually just let them pile up and pretend they don't exist. might help me actually read the important stuff.

@harini_mukesh Guilty! I did that too! I tried different strategies like aggressively unsubscribe but ultimately if AI can sort them in a folder for me that's a win :)

That's a pretty useful application! I'm getting flooded by these types of emails, love that's local and private too!
@matheus_paranhos1 Oh noes! Please do try and let me know how it goes!
