I built Free or Fee, a Chrome extension that lets you hold a key of your choice (Control on a Mac by default) and hover over any link while browsing, and it shows you whether the page behind it is a paid or free product, uses a freemium model or requires sign-in. I created this because I kept running into paywalls when I wanted to try new AI tools. Usually, you go to the website and then realise you cannot use it without paying for a subscription or creating an account first, or that the "free" version is really a 14-day trial. Now I can know in advance and save time. The extension is free to use. For the first week after you install it, everything is unlocked, and after that you keep 5 scans a day for free. If you use it a lot, there's a one-time $9 lifetime upgrade for unlimited scans and a few extras. No subscriptions, because a monthly fee on a paywall detector felt a bit ironic. It also doesn't track you; there's no need for accounts, and it reads the pages on your own computer. At the end of the day, what I hated was not being told that something has a price. I don't mind paying if a product is good and provides value, but we all deserve to know in advance. I would appreciate it if you could give me some feedback!
