Findborg is a find engine, not a chatbot — so our AI layer has to be a fast, disciplined intent engine. Thousands of short completions a day: understanding what you're really looking for, summarizing results, suggesting the next find. That workload needs three things: low latency, predictable structured output, and a price that survives high volume. OpenAI's model tiers fit that shape exactly — we run the efficient tier for high-volume search enrichment and step up only where deeper answers earn it.
The second reason is that it's more than text for us. Borg's natural voice — the hands-free conversation loop on our new-tab page — runs on OpenAI's TTS through the same API and key. One vendor covering chat, intent, and voice kept a two-person-and-some-agents team shipping instead of integrating.
And honestly: the OpenAI-compatible API became the industry's lingua franca. Betting on the standard was the low-regret choice.
