This is perfect. I've just downloaded the app :)
I was surprised by one thing: after I signed up I could explore books "Recommended" to me. How did you know what to recommend to me? (I saw this _before_ I selected my reading preferences).
Hi @jowitaemberton! Without any preferences set, we are initially showing a set of titles which are popular within the community as a whole. Over time, you will get more suggestions based on books you've added to your profile and your interests.

This looks awesome, can't wait to try it out! @miles_scherrer any thoughts on getting goodreads sync to work? I've tried all the methods below, but the website just continues to say Fetching your books from Goodreads...
Hi there, I like the idea and the overall feel of your product! I dabbled around a bit and found a few things I think could be improved.
The comment section e.g. (1) Allows only very limited comments in length, (2) the comment input text field is only one line and does not expand and (3) the comment section itself is very narrow, breaking with the overall layout and grid design of the rest of the page.
In the peoples section, I would assume I can find other bookshelf users, but after browsing a bit it seems to be authors (Tim Ferris, Elon Musk)? Is it just authors or also other readers? Or are these initial fake profiles? I feel like fake profiles take away credibility. Your product is good enough to attract customers without them.
@michael_froehlich Thanks for great feedback Michael! We're aiming to sort out the comment issues out for next release.
Regarding the curated user profiles, we've found that a lot of people want to know what experts and notable persons are reading. As we are building a social graph of readers, authors and curators we believe it is helpful to compile such recommendations and making it possible to follow their profiles. We always specify when an account is curated by Bookself, but maybe we could e.g. add some badges to make this more clear at first glance. Most people you see are regular users though.
This is everything Good Reads should have been! I really hope fellow book lovers start to use this. I'm really loving the wave of meaningful social apps. I'm reeeeallly excited about this app 😍
As a longtime user, this app has everything I want and need. The team has a fast iteration cycle and are careful not to bloat the app with unnecessary features. I go straight to Bookself when looking for new books and am always excited to update my profile when I've finished a book. Keep it up team!
This is an awesome awesome product. As an avid bibliophile who loves to keep track of their reading progress, the UI and easy search for titles put Goodreads to shame. Also a huge fan of being able to sort between traditional reads, audiobooks, and e-books.
There are only a couple of things that I think would really enhance this experience for me.
- the ability to add start and end dates to each book that I’ve read
- being able to indicate the number of times you’ve read the book
- virtual bookclubs with others reading the book
Overall this is a solid app and I’m excited to make the switch from Goodreads! :)
@abena_anim_somuah Thanks Abena! On the features you mention:
1. We automatically add start/end dates to books you add, just click a book that you have added and the dates will show up above the book's description. They can also be edited there.
2. We don't have this but will look into it.
3. We "kind of" have this but this is something we are working on...If you click the chat button on a book or the messenger tab, you have real-time chat channels for each book where you can start discussion threads. Our goal here is to start posting good discussion questions to spark a conversation and over time allow for author Q&As and similar stuff.
It is also possible to create a collaborative list with friends where you add books together and discuss them in a group chat.
We're experimenting a bit around these features so let us know your thoughts :)

@miles_scherrer hmmm not seeing where I can edit dates. Could you send a screenshot of where you see that on your end?
