Unboom finds the bass note your untreated room exaggerates and gently turns just that down on your Mac. Scan with your mic or pick it by ear, choose Gentle, Medium, or Strong, and flip Correction on. Never boosts. No data collected. No subscription.

Never boosts" is the right call - most room correction tools make things worse by pushing up the nulls. How does the mic scan cope with a laptop's built-in mic, which rolls off right where the problem frequencies are? And does the correction apply system-wide or per output device?
@gbasovv Great questions! You're right that a MacBook's built-in mic isn't a calibrated measurement mic, and its low-frequency response can limit scan accuracy at the very bottom. The scan is intended as a quick starting point, not a lab-grade room measurement, you can also identify the offending bass note by ear.
Correction is system-wide across Mac audio, but it's associated with your speaker/room setup rather than individual apps. Headphones are left uncorrected, so switching between speakers and headphones won't mess with your headphone sound.
Thanks for digging into the technical details!
@heykadirhan Thanks, that makes sense, being upfront that the scan is a starting point is more convincing than claiming lab accuracy. Leaving headphones untouched is a nice detail; that's exactly where a system-wide EQ usually bites. Good luck with the rest of the launch day!
This could be really useful for people working with music in small home studios where proper acoustic treatment isn't practical.
@dennis_porter Exactly, that's one of the main situations I had in mind when building Unboom. Proper acoustic treatment is ideal, but it's not always practical in a small or rented room. I wanted to make it easier to tame that one problematic bass note without needing to treat the entire room. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
"never boosts" is the detail that makes this trustworthy instead of just another EQ preset, cutting one resonant note is a lot safer than anything that pushes gain elsewhere and risks clipping or exciting a different mode. question on the mic scan: if I move the desk or swap speakers, does it know to prompt a rescan, or is it on me to remember that the room's acoustic signature just changed and go redo it manually.
@galdayan Yeah, for now you'd have to remember to rescan if you move things around. Unboom can't detect those changes yet. A reminder to rescan would actually be a useful addition, thanks for bringing it up!
The fact that it only turns down problematic bass instead of boosting other frequencies sounds like a sensible approach.
@albert_nelson1 Thanks! That was a deliberate design choice. I wanted to address the room's exaggerated bass without boosting other frequencies or adding unnecessary energy to the signal. Glad that approach makes sense to you!
