With Opal, Students focus on learning while building digital habits that last a lifetime. We’ve already seen this work at scale: 70% of our millions of users are students. No one forces them to use Opal, they choose it because it works. That’s why we know schools can partner with students, rather than fight against them, to create healthier digital cultures. We're thrilled to announce Opal For Schools is live at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, creating a focused, distraction-free learning environment for all. There’s growing momentum around banning phones in schools. But bans are hard to enforce, and often backfire. What if there were a smarter way? With Opal for Schools, we’ve built exactly that: a simple, student-friendly phone policy powered by Opal’s market-leading screen time app. No hardware. No delays. Students keep their phones, and they actually like it. Let's go!

@kschlenker Congrats on the launch, curious how you position Opal for Schools against blanket bans. Do schools see it more as a replacement policy or a complement to enforcement?

Kenneth Schlenker

@tonyabracadabra most US states and EU countries have banned or are in the process of banning phones in schools. However, it's usually up to schools to decide how they want to implement the ban. Usually, they are not mandated to lock the physical devices away (there are exceptions to this).

The current solution schools are offered is either to implement a honor system which means policing the kids for compliance, or to lock phones away in lockers or pouches, which has many benefits but also means more logistics for teachers. We provide an alternative for schools who prefer a software solution and want to focus on giving students the tools to develop a life-long skill.

@kschlenker Love this approach 🙌 As a COO I often see how rigid phone bans create resistance instead of focus. The idea of partnering with students rather than fighting against them feels like the smarter, more sustainable path.

Curious — how do you see this scaling in schools with very different cultures (public vs private, different countries)? Will adoption rely mostly on student motivation, or will teachers/admins play a strong role?

It seems that with the new school year, more and more people head towards productivity over smartphone activity.

Pinterest also created some things in these "focus" conditions: https://newsroom.pinterest.com/en-gb/news/pinterest-rolls-out-in-app-prompt-to-discourage-phone-distractions-in-schools/

Wishing you good luck with this initiative! :)

@busmark_w_nika Thank you so much Nika. I agree, more and more people are paying attention to this. But in my opinion, we're still nowhere near the level of attention needed to create a healthier society.

@kschlenker TBH, I gained ADT to be so much on social media, so need to reduce my time on desktop :D

Huge congrats on the launch of Opal! It's genuinely refreshing to see a screen time app that zeroes in on making control 'fun' rather than just another restrictive measure. The clever integration of leaderboards and rewards sounds like a truly brilliant way to motivate users, creating a positive and engaging experience around digital well-being. This gamified approach could be incredibly effective in helping people achieve their much-needed focus goals without feeling penalized—it's such a fresh take on a widespread modern challenge.

I'm curious, what was the driving inspiration behind weaving these playful, competitive elements into the very core of the experience? And are there any intriguing plans to expand further on these features as Opal evolves?
