Hi Product Hunt! 👋🏽 I’m Matthew, a Co-Founder @ Lingocat and a full-stack software engineer, I’m excited to share a new product I’ve been building with a good friend of mine, @miroslav_dimitrov1, to help us learn new languages faster. 🗣️ Lingocat - Practice Speaking Have you tried learning to speak a new language, and been overwhelmed by the repetitive grammar and vocabulary lessons? If you have, Lingocat is perfect for you - improve your ability to speak a new language with lessons where you practice communicating in a variety of scenarios and activities! 🤔 Why Lingocat? I spent 6 months learning Spanish before a trip to South America, I used Duolingo with friends, and practiced almost every day on Anki. At the end of the 6 months, I found that I wasn’t any closer to being able speak confidently with other Spanish speakers. Miro and I built Lingocat for other people like us, who want to become conversational, but are struggling with the existing methods for learning a new language. 🧠 Features to help you become conversational - Structured Lessons: Improve your speaking confidence with a variety of lessons for conversation practice that will keep you engaged in different scenarios - AI Language Tutors: Receive feedback in real-time when you make mistakes from an AI language tutor who will provide helpful suggestions and guidance - Progress Tracker: Track your progress towards fluency, you’ll earn points in each lesson every time you successfully use a new word in conversation! - Context-Dependent Hints: Learn how to say new phrases and respond to a variety of questions with dynamic hints that help you formulate a response in your target language. - Vocab Tracker: Check how many words you’ve learned to speak, updated every time you say a new word in a lesson. ⚡Download Lingocat on iOS for FREE today and start your journey to becoming fluent in a new language! Let me know if you have any feedback or questions - we’re constantly working on improving our app, to make language learning easier for everyone, so I’d love to hear what you think and how we can make Lingocat even better for you!! Cheers, Matthew Podolak Co-Founder @ Lingocat 🐱

@miroslav_dimitrov1 @matthew_podolak when will it become available for Android ?
Zhiqi Shi
Great product! It's much simpler and more elegant compared to competitors. Congrats on the launch, and looking forward to seeing the Android version soon!
Matthew Podolak
@zhiqi_shi Thanks!! We're working on releasing both web and android versions to make it easier to practice wherever you might be
Miroslav Dimitrov
@zhiqi_shi Thank you Zhiqi, appreciate it!

Idea of messaging evokes something "natural" to me. So I reckon, people could feel motivation to learn new vocab. It is like chatting with a real friend, isn't it? Next type of practice: Write this tweet/post in this language. Real-time situations :) That's how I learned English :) especially through posting.
Matthew Podolak
@busmark_w_nika yeah thats exactly what we were going for!! We wanted to make the language learning process more natural and engaging than traditional learning methods which can be quite repetitive
Nika
@matthew_podolak You did a good job! :)
Miroslav Dimitrov
@busmark_w_nika Thanks Nika! Our goal is to make the learning feel natural and fun indeed. A tweet/post reading session with a tutor is definitely an interesting idea that could match that criteria!
Nika
@miroslav_dimitrov1 I am happy you like the idea :)

Looks amazing. Trying to learn German for a long time. Sad you don't have Android version. What's the pricing?
Matthew Podolak
@krazygaurav93 thanks! its free to use!!
Gaurav Singhal
@matthew_podolak Damm. I envy IOS users. If you don't mind me asking, how did you manage the pricing to be free?
Matthew Podolak
@krazygaurav93 my co-founder and I absorb the operating costs since we also have full-time jobs, and the costs are quite low thanks to Heroku + insanely cheap API calls with OpenAI
Gaurav Singhal
@matthew_podolak I understand. I was able to download it on my Mac however I didn't find the German language. Since you are using LLMs for most of the functionality in the app, what is stopping you from adding more languages or maybe the flexibility of choosing the source and target language? I apologies for all these comments/questions. I am just excited to use your app. I currently use Azure deployment of Realtime API but it's not user-friendly.
Matthew Podolak
@krazygaurav93 thanks for trying it! we're trying to do thorough tests of each language before releasing them and ensuring that our gamification system + glossary are updated

How many languages do you have? Can I learn Arabic or Mandarine by myself?
Matthew Podolak
@viorica_vanica right now we have Spanish, French, and Japanese, and are working to ensure our users have the best possible experience before adding more. Are there any other languages youd like to see added?
Vio from Selftalk
@matthew_podolak Portuguese
David Fischer
@viorica_vanica Yes I vote for Portuguese as well!

Curious about how AI can teach us better than standard human methods for foreign language given that AI seems to have learned languages in ways we don't yet understand. I've also thought that there must be other more effective methods of learning by concentrating on principles like Zipfs Law: https://youtu.be/fCn8zs912OE?t=4... to focus on words that are more used first to have the essential list of the top 100 words etc before you start talking about "taking an airplane" or "having a passport" etc
Matthew Podolak
@terrence_kelleman that sounds interesting, will take a look!!
David Fischer
@terrence_kelleman I see in some points advantages in using AI for language learning for example in the personalisation of learning content for the learners. But human interaction and speaking with real people is key for language acquisition. Thanks for the link to video about Zipfs Law! Very interesting and I'll learn more about how this applies in different languages!

My 2¢: Have a replay feature that allows the user to hear it again at a slower pace. Sometimes, its hard to keep up when learning anything new. But great app @matthew_podolak Congratulations!
Matthew Podolak
@siddharthpereiras thanks for the feedback Siddharth! We added an interactive playback bar so you can go back to different parts of the audio thats playing and will be adding a replay speed feature soon!!!
