Cibo uses AR and realtime text recognition to highlight dishes on the menu. Point your phone at a menu and select the dish you want to see photos of. No more typing into Google Image Search!
@rrhoover let me know if you run into anything while using it! I've been optimizing it over the last few days based on feedback from early users but because the formats of menus can be very very varied it will take some iterations to get it really right!
Last week I was on holiday in Italy and I obviously went to a lot of restaurants. I don't speak Italian, so I ended up googling a lot of the dishes to see what they would look like. That got annoying pretty fast so I made Cibo, an app to help you figure out what to pick at a restaurant!
You can see a video if it here:
For one my other apps (Soosee) I had done a lot with text recognition already so I could re-use a lot of code for this project. I built the app in 5 days from idea to App Store submission which really shows the power of SwiftUI for quickly creating apps.
Here is my initial tweet from Monday when I had the idea, you can follow the thread to see the app evolve over time: https://twitter.com/jordibruin/s...
Cibo does not track any data and does not contain ads. Users can scan 50 menu items for free, afterwards they can make an in app purchase (€1,99 or equal in your local currency) to perform unlimited scans.
Let me know if you have any questions about the process of building this, or if you have suggestions for how I can improve the app!
Thanks,
Jordi

@jordibruin This is the app for me, this is me at every foreign restaurant trying to figure out what dish is what. (that plus being very indecisive)
@pallavi_khanna most of the time the results still end up okay due to auto correct on the search engine side. But if not, there is a text field at the top which you can use to correct the typo!

How is this different from searching on google photos for a dish? Because I am getting the impression that the photo revealed is NOT how the food looks from the restaurant where the scan was done from.
This is such a great idea and it led me to search for other similar products. The same thing was built in 2016. Check here: https://www.fastcompany.com/3059...
Very cool idea! Not sure it's something I'd ever pay for (after all, googling isn't soooo difficult) but then again, I do this a lot as a pretty frequent traveler. So, kudos!
@sarah_donahoo you get 25 free scans (and 25 extra if you hold the 'remaining free scans' button 🤫) so it will probably last you a few weeks at least 🙂
Umm, YUM. Awesome product, @jordibruin (and a great story!). I'll never get over the accidental Ox Tail I ordered in northern Spain one year. If only Cibo had existed then!
Congratulations on the launch, 🍔🍜🥘
