Most of what I listen to doesn't exist on Spotify. Remixes, mashups, slowed and reverb edits. A lot of it also comes from smaller artists who just share their music directly with fans instead of going through a distributor. I was already downloading files and just needed something decent to play them on.
I looked at other offline players first. Some are really well built, full of features and options. But that's the opposite of what I needed. I wanted something as simple to use as a streaming app, you open it and it just plays.
So I built Wasp. Kept it deliberately small, no internet permission at all, no ads, no tracking, no subscription. The one area I actually went deep on is playlists, letting you build the whole vibe yourself, from the cover art down to how each one sounds and feels.
This is my first real launch and I built the whole thing solo, so I'd genuinely love to hear what's missing, what's confusing, anything.
What's next
The goal was to keep this small, open it, make a playlist, start listening. But a few things are already on my list:
Catalogs. Right now, all playlists are in one flat list, and it quickly becomes cluttered when there are more than a few. Catalogs will work like folders, so you can group playlists however you like.
Filters for all songs. Right now, there's only a search field for songs, but it would be great to add some filters to make it easier to find songs when there are a lot of them.
New filters for cover art, perhaps. I've experimented with turning photos into pixel art, as well as an ASCII version. I'm not sure yet if these belong in the app or if this is just a fun idea.
Making the microphone permission optional. Wasp currently requires microphone access for the real-time waveform visualizer, it uses an Android API that needs mic permission by design, even though the mic itself is never used, nothing is recorded. Next update I want to make that optional. If you haven't given permission, you'll have a static wave; if you've given permission, you'll have a live wave that will react to the music.
Quick note on the screenshots
The playlist covers in the screenshots, on Product Hunt and Google Play, are AI-generated. They're not in the app itself, I just used them on my phone as examples for the screenshots. In Wasp, every cover comes from your own gallery, nothing pre-installed, no AI (I personally like how AI covers look, but I know not everyone shares that taste).
