I started building Utopia because I wanted a chat app that actually put group conversations first. Every major platform treats group chat as a secondary feature bolted onto DMs, or buries it under layers of servers, channels, and bots. I wanted something simpler — a place where communities could just talk. This project has been a labor of love for over 6 years. In that time, I've rewritten the UI stack twice — first from XML views to Jetpack Compose, then from Compose to Kotlin Multiplatform so I could bring it to iOS and desktop. Each rewrite taught me something new about what makes a chat app feel right. The core idea never changed though: give groups the tools they need (polls, moderation, discovery, custom themes) without the complexity they don't.
