USBRecognized - USB Device Info — Identify VID/PID via WebHID (Chrome, Edge)

Hey Product Hunt! 👋 We just shipped a new tool — USB Device Info — and wanted to share what it does and why we built it. The problem: When you plug in a USB device and Windows shows "Unknown USB Device" in Device Manager, you're stuck. Identifying it traditionally means digging through system menus, installing vendor drivers, or using third-party software — annoying on your own PC, impossible on a restricted work machine. The solution: USB Device Info uses the WebHID API to read Vendor ID (VID) and Product ID (PID) directly from connected HID devices — right in your browser. It then looks up the manufacturer and product name from a built-in local database of major USB vendors (Logitech, Razer, Corsair, Microsoft, Sony, SteelSeries, 8BitDo, and more). What makes it different: Zero installation — no drivers, no software, no signup. Just open the page in Chrome or Edge and click "Detect device" 100% private — device data never leaves your browser. The vendor database is bundled locally. No servers involved Cross-platform — works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS — anything that runs Chrome or Edge Multi-device — identifies keyboards, mice, gamepads, touchpads, joysticks, drawing tablets, barcode scanners, and any USB HID device Counterfeit detection — fake gaming peripherals often use mismatched VID/PID. Compare the identified vendor with the brand on the box to spot fakes Report export — export device info as text for tech support tickets or warranty claims Real use cases we've seen: Identifying a mystery USB device found in a drawer Checking if a "Logitech" mouse from a third-party seller is genuine Getting VID/PID for driver downloads when Device Manager only says "Unknown Device" Verifying the exact product model before buying accessories Browser limitation: WebHID is currently supported only in Chrome and Edge (Firefox and Safari haven't implemented it yet). All our other tools — keyboard tester, mouse tester, gamepad tester, refresh rate test, dead pixel test, microphone test, webcam test — work in any modern browser; only this device identification feature needs WebHID.
