When a crypto swap fails, do you actually know where your money goes?

Quick question for the crypto folks here 👇
When you do a cross-chain swap and it fails or gets stuck on "pending," do you actually know where your funds are at that moment? On-chain? In a contract? Refunded automatically?
Most people don't — and honestly, most platforms don't explain it. That bothered us enough while building UpSwap (a non-custodial, no-KYC, no-wallet-connect swap tool) that we wrote out exactly what happens in each failure scenario: where funds physically sit, what's recoverable, and what isn't.
Curious how others here think about this:
Have you ever had a swap fail and panic about where the money went?
Do you check whether a platform is custodial before using it, or just trust the UI?
Would love to hear your experiences. 🙏
