Umbra - an autonomous agent that lives on your Android phone

by•
Tell Umbra what to do. It works in the background, operates apps for you, builds and tests code in a real Linux environment on the same phone, checks its own work, and asks before anything risky.

Hey Product Hunt! 👋

I'm Pinyen Cheng, a high school student and indie developer from Taiwan. I'm excited to introduce Umbra, an open-source autonomous AI agent that actually lives and works on your Android phone.

I've always wondered: Why do we have such powerful computers in our pockets, yet most AI assistants can barely do anything beyond answering questions?

That's why I built Umbra.

Here's what makes it different:

📱 Real Android control — Umbra can navigate apps, tap, type, scroll, and interact with your phone autonomously.

💻 A full Linux environment — It can write code, run terminals, build software, and execute real development workflows directly on your phone.

⚡ True background execution — Let your agent work while you continue using your phone.

🧠 Bring your own AI — Connect your preferred models through Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or compatible providers.

🔐 You're in control — Sensitive actions require approval, and you can stop the agent and revoke its access.

It's open-source under the MIT license, and root is optional.

This is an early project, and there's still plenty to improve. I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially:

What would you actually want an autonomous AI agent to do on your phone?
