Still launches here Saturday, and it's free on the Mac App Store until Friday

Still launches on Product Hunt this Saturday, Oct 17.

What it is: a small native Mac app for three kinds of breaks. A minute to look away, a few minutes to move, and a quiet minute to breathe, each on its own schedule, in a full-screen Day or Night scene.

What it isn't: there's no account, no tracking, no subscription, and no iPhone app. It's Mac-only, for Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later.

To thank early visitors, Still is free on the Mac App Store through Friday, Oct 16. On launch day it's $4.99, then $9.99 from Oct 18.

Designing a break that doesn't feel like an interruption

Most break reminders fail the same way: they pop up at the worst moment, so we learn to dismiss them.

While building Still we tried to design the opposite. A few choices:

  • Each break opens a full-screen scene, a coastal Day or a star-filled Night, so stepping away feels like a small change of place rather than a warning.

  • Sound is off by default. A chime in the middle of focused work is exactly the jolt we wanted to avoid, so soundscapes play only if you turn them on.

  • Reminders can pause themselves while your microphone is in use or a presentation is in front, then wait a quiet minute before resuming.

  • Movement breaks now show a small animated figure for each exercise, redrawn this week.

No replies to the first thread yet, so I'm still curious: what makes you dismiss a reminder?

How do you actually take breaks during long Mac days?

Hi, I'm Alex, the maker of Still, a small Mac app for eye, movement and breathing breaks. It launches here on Saturday, Oct 17.

Before then I'd love to learn how you handle long screen days:

  1. Do you use a break reminder today? Which one, and what makes you snooze or quit it?

  2. Which matters most to you: resting your eyes, moving, or a minute of breathing?

  3. Should reminders pause on their own during calls and presentations, or would you rather decide each time?

I'll share what we change based on your answers before launch day.
